Top 11 pics of 2011 (post 1 of 9)
With 2011 now behind us, I have scoured my pics from the year now gone by to find my favorite 11 images (excluding those I took in Germany as that doesn’t go along with my “normal” life here in the Mozambique and Malawi area of southeastern Africa). I will post images by the order in which they were shot in time.
These three images are grouped together as all were captured while staying on Zomba Plateau, Malawi exactly one year ago as I was recovering from my most serious of a string of malaria bouts. One of the new toys I was playing with at the time was a closeup lens kit that allowed me to crawl onto my bellow (nearly) and explore a whole new micro world full of insects and flowers. All three of these images were included in my 2012 “Malawi and Mozambique | Nature” calendar for sale on RedBubble.
Microworld: Zomba
Why, oh why, do I find it so enjoyable to go out and capture the tiny details all around me? The insignificant bugs sucking pollen; fantastic flowers from up close; thrilling little –very little– moments right in my own backyard.
Here are a few of my favorites from Zomba, Malawi. (Click image for full size).
Macros from Meponda, Mozambique
A few macro images from over the weekend as our family descended upon the lake in the small town called Meponda in Niassa Province
The first is a shot of our lovely salad. I couldn’t resist, especially with those big chunks of feta cheese. The other images come from a mosquito net that had tiny red bugs crawling all over.
Abstract Macro
The other day I was playing around with my 10X macro lens. Being new to the whole business, I found that there are some challenges to this whole macro shooting thing.
- wind becomes very noticeable; even the lightest breeze starts to make one wish to swear like a sailor
- lighting becomes a factor… harsh light is bad, cloudy overcast days are good
- a tripod (or monopod) becomes a necessity, unless you can sit your camera on a nearby rock or something
Overall, I’m pleased with the abstract feeling these macro shots produced right from my front yard here in Mozambique.
