Doubleshot Coffee and Tea, Johannesburg

A few weeks ago my oldest daughter and I headed to South Africa for some unscheduled medical work. While in the Johannesburg area we had time to enjoy a few opportunities that just simply don’t present themselves to us in Mozambique. Like volunteering at Doubleshot Coffee and Tea; a shop that my friend Matt recently began working at. We were fortunate to come on a day that both co-owners were present; one from the area and the other from Thyolo, Malawi at a lovely little spot called Satemwa. Funnily enough, here I am in Joberg but now seeing a guy from Malawi whom I had actually met before as our family has stayed on his tea estate in the past.

My 14-year-old daughter Mika kept busy for the morning stamping bags and filling them with freshly roasted coffee from Guatemala, Brazil or Ethiopia while I worked on redoing all the blackboards situated on the sidewalk outside advertising the greatness of this little unpretentious shop that truly and deeply has a passion for what it does: simply provide fantastic coffee and tea. To keep us happy we were fed coffees and bagels. Happiness indeed! (And I think my daughter has found a future job possibility that might just help put her through college one day.)

Top 11 pics of 2011 (post 9 of 9: Coffee Beans on the Tree)

Now tell me… how can this not make ones’s spirit soar? Shot this in December while visiting some South African friends who have planted coffee trees as hedges around their property near Majuni, Malawi. The green beans they harvest roast up very nicely and I can’t wait until my fledgling trees give me some of my very own coffee harvest. One of the perks of living here I guess.
