"Take a picture", in Ciyawo & Chichewa. Documentary & cultural photography from East Africa, with a few other things thrown in for good measure…

Video

I’ve been involved in video production since 1993 when, during summer breaks from college, I used to assist professional industrial video producers and wedding videographers in southeastern Pennsylvania.

In 1995, I got a bachelor’s in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Audio & Video Production. My senior project was a spoof on the popular TV show Cops and, using a few roommates and their friends, I filmed Pizza Cops detailing the ordinary lives of pizza delivery men and the challenges they face each night. I’d so love to digitize that one day… if I can find it again.

After college I moved off to Arizona where I joined up with a Christian film company. But during my 8 years there as an employee, I only managed to help, ever-so-little, on a film we shot but which was never produced. Instead, I worked as a graphic artist / web designer / film critic / online content producer. That kept me pretty busy until we made plans for Africa.

These days, I produce short videos that inform people about our team’s work in Mozambique (online, but password protected for security reasons) and have been experimenting with shooting music videos and documentaries about the Yawo people. I’ve got some great ideas in mind for the future mainly using the local language in Mozambique where I live to create original materials that educate while entertaining. With the advent of battery or electricity-powered “video shows” even in remote villages, the age of the DVD has made films accessible to the masses. And as smart phones get cheaper and more readily available, digital content will be in increasing demand.

My gear includes a Macbook and Final Cut Pro editing software, when I have electricity handy that is. My camera of choice, at least until I can manage to upgrade, is a Panasonic PV-GS300 3CCD miniDV.
